It was subsequently used as a refuge by the Moriscos during the turbulent times following the general political upheaval after the capitulation of Granada in 1492. From the site of this ancient fortress, now in ruins, there are splendid views of sea and mountains. Present day Arenas is a typical village of the AxarquÍa enjoying a quiet, tranquil lifestyle.
