It lies, at 689 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda Mountains in a steep, mountainous area. Vineyards, almond and olive groves as well as some vegetable plantations on the terraces near town, are the principal sources of income. The area is irrigated by the river Rio de la Fuente and numerous small streams cascading down from the mountains. It is situated in a commanding position near the ruins of a medieval fort.
