There is very good access on tarmacked roads to the town and there is a daily bus service to the neighbouring villages in the area as well as to Malaga and Velez-Malaga. Two mountain rivers, Rio Salares and Rio de la Fuente irrigate the varied crops on the green fertile hillsides around the town.In the old traditional time-honoured manner many vineyards also extend over wide areas of these hillsides producing a rich local wine which is different from the popular Moscatel produced in the neighbouring towns. The village also boasts a small industry for the production of olive oil, second in importance to the production of grapes, wine and raisins. Salares was established by the Romans and in later times an Arab community successfully cultivated the neighbouring lands. Of especial architectural interest in the town is the "Alminar", a beautiful decorated tower which in former times probably formed part of the village mosque. There are some shops and one or two small local bars and restaurants.
