District: LA VEGA BAJA / EL BAIX SEGURA Population: 93008 Area: Costa Blanca Altitude: 7 TRAVELLING TO TORREVIEJA The quickest way to reach Torrevieja is by the N-332 road. Torrevieja nestles between two lakes, in the middle of a great plain, and is a highly popular tourist destination. The town has a large foreign population, with the British being the most numerous, making up 13.3% of the total population of the town. These are followed by the Germans (5.15%), Swedes (3.14%), Russians (2.73%), Colombians (2.58%), Ukrainians (2.24%), Moroccans (2.17%) and Norwegians (2.17%). The modern town was constructed around an old tower or torre vieja in Spanish, from where the town takes its name. The natural assets that have marked the town´s history and day-to-day life include splendid beaches, which spurred the development of the tourist trade alongside the traditional fishing and salt production industries. Even though the local salt industry is one of the most important in Europe, Torrevieja is also famous worldwide for its Habaneras festival and international competition, which has been declared to be of international tourist interest and is celebrated in honour of sailors who introduced this style of music to the town upon their return from trading in the Spanish colony of Cuba. Two great salt lakes, covering a surface area of over 2,000 hectares, give the town its own unique identity. From north to south, the Torrevieja coastline begins at the popular La Mata beach, which boasts fine sands and all the necessary amenities. A string of small rocky coves stretches from Cape Cervera to Punta de Salaret, of which El Mojón and Las Zorras are the most spectacular. Punta de Salaret marks the beginning of two of Torrevieja?s busiest and most popular beaches, namely Los Locos and the Playa del Cura, both boasting fine sand, calm waters, modern facilities and a bustling esplanade. The port houses a yacht club and a modern marina, as well as a small beach sandwiched between the marina and the salt dock. Leisure activities available at the dock include ´´ two diving clubs, sailing courses and two boat hire companies. Further to the south, Los Náufragos beach marks the end of the Torrevieja coastline. There are also five golf courses on offer in the district. Each year, between July and August, the Eras de la Sal complex hosts the Habaneras festival, an international tourist attraction which brings together the best national and international musical and choral groups. Down by the sea, stories are retold about the sailors who went to Cuba to trade salt, and brought back Habaneras music with them. This is not the only interesting cultural activity which takes place in town. Various events, award ceremonies and contests take place throughout the year, such as: the International Poetry Prize, the City of Torrevieja Book Prize, the National Ship Modelling Contest, the National Sculpture Contest, the Photography Prize, the Speed Painting Prize, the Local Prize for Prose and Poetry, the Art and Literature Prize and the traditional Torrevieja Book Fair. -
