District: EL BAIX VINALOPÓ Population: 22253 Area: Costa Blanca Altitude: 6 TRAVELLING TO SANTA POLA Santa Pola can be reached by road from the A-7 (junction 72), by following the N-332 towards Cartagena. It can also be reached from the N-340, likewise following the N-332 towards Cartagena. El Altet Airport is also 10 kilometres away. Santa Pola benefits from warm temperatures all year round, making swimming a relaxing and enjoyable experience, even more so due to the purity of its waters, which have maintained blue flag status since 1987. Their beaches have even been awarded a five parasol rating for water and sand quality, and have received the ISO 9001 and 14001 international certifications for Quality Management and Environmental Management, as certified by Aenor. The western beaches (El Pinet, La Gola naturist beach, Tamarit, Playa Lisa and Gran Playa) are a great place for children and old people, due to the calm sea and shallow waters. The eastern beaches (Levante, Calas de Santiago Bernabeu, Varadero, Calas de Santa Pola del Este and Calas de l''''''''''''''''Aljub) are sheltered from northern winds by Cape Santa Pola, and thus boast an ideal microclimate, as well as crystalline waters and fine sand. Las Salinas Nature Reserve: Declared a protected area in 1986, these salt extraction ponds cover an area of 2,946 hectares, and are of great interest due to their sights, their wildlife, their ecology and their geology. In addition to this, under the right conditions spectacular sunsets can be witnessed here. The Salt Museum doubles as an Information Centre for the reserve, organising guided trips and bird watching. The island of Tabarca, off the coast, is the most important marine nature reserve in Spain, with crystal clear waters and a wide variety of flora and fauna. A boat can be taken from Santa Pola to the island, taking around 25 minutes. Another place well worth visiting is the Santa Pola coral reef, the only Miocene reef in Europe. Santa Pola is known for its traditional cuisine, and the variety of its seafood dishes. All of the local shellfish dishes are exquisite, but the shrimp (quisquilla), Norway lobster (cigala) and red bay prawns (gambas rojas de la bahia) stand out. When choosing a starter, it is worth trying out the salazones, salt-cured tuna (mojama and bonito), hard roe (hueva) and cod (bacalao). Rice dishes are a staple of regional cuisine, including arroz a banda, arroz negro, seafood paella and arròs y gatet. Other noteworthy local dishes include grouper stew (gazpacho de mero), monkfish in white sauce (blanquillo de rape) and the unrivalled caldero, a rice and fish dish. The most popular fish dishes are gilt-head bream (dorada), sea bass (lubina) and whiting (lechola). Ice cream, cakes (mantecado and pastas), puff-pastries (hojaldre), crazy tart (coca boba) and sweet rolls (rollitos) are all traditional desserts available in Santa Pola. The high quality of these dishes and the skill of the local chefs makes Santa Pola cuisine a must for visitors.
